This is the last section of chapters in the book. Victor now understands the situation that Sarah is in, her shaking body and fragile voice, trying to kill herself over a boy that doesn't love her. Victor also notices the man that worked at the lock shop (Dor), didn't seem as healthy or strong. Ever since Dor stopped the time, he began to age. Victor then sees Grace, his wife enter the cryonics facility with Jed. He doesn't know why she is here. Victor's dead body laid before her, frozen up without life, but his soul is still alive. She approaches the cylinder and looks at Victor. She kicks the glass and bangs on it, frustrated. Victor tells her, "I'm ok," but she can't hear him. She then exits the room and and Victor feels exposed. Victor then sees the future, major metropolis centuries from then. Big buildings covering up the greenery and color. Victor sees moments from his past life and figures that he is a legend in the future. Dor asks him if her wants to live another life, and he says why wouldn't I and then Dor states that he has done this also. Dor suddenly shows Victor in the glass, shriveled up and lying dead. He is lost.
Dor tells his story now. Once he was able to change the hour, Victor and Sarah were no longer satisfied with their lives. Dor aged quicker by the minute, getting more pale and discovering a sickness, the plague. Sarah and Victor quickly brought Dor to the old man at the clock shop. They both thought that Dor was being suffered but it was actually a blessing. He had learned the appreciate the life he had led. Dor then awoke in a beautiful place and rushed to his house. He saw Alli and she turned away. He was in heaven. Epilogue: Sarah was rushed to the hospital and next to her on the gurney was Victor Delamonte, suffering from cancer. Victor tells Roger to do something if he says a special word, Grace. This novel was written to explain the meaning of time. We find that Sarah was a medical doctor who cured the disease of cancer. She thanked her friend Victor. One day, there was construction going on and workers were digging a hole. They found something and quickly dug faster. Inside was a room with carvings of people and shapes. They had found the cave Dor was in. Quote: "This is a story about the meaning of time. " ~ This quote begins Chapter 81 and is perfectly clear about the novel itself. All the ideas and points revolved around time, whether it was about Sarah, Victor, or Dor. They all either needed more time, needed less time, or wanted time to stop. You must appreciate every moment you spen with your loved ones because there will be a day where you lose them and you will never know when that day is. These 3 characters learn that lesson and regret doing the things they did instead of with their loved ones.

In these couple of chapters, Dor, Sarah, and Victor are all in the same narrative meaning that they are spoken about in the same place and they are talking to each other. Victor is now going through the process of freezing, saying goodbye to his rotting liver and the cancer he suffered from. Victor feels fine when he tries to stand up from the bed. Sarah is trying to kill herself from the alcohol and poison she is taking into her body. Sarah enters a room, perfectly fine, not dizzy or anything, and sees an old man getting up from a bed. This man is Victor. Chapter 65 is coincidental because first, they booth see each other, and second, they were both dying but suddenly feel like nothing every happened to them. Victor then thinks that he was between worlds as a person who floated in near-death experiences. He then thought it was when he was frozen alive, when his body is frozen, but his soul can go anywhere. Victor started talking to Sarah about his life which he rarely does. After listening to what Victor had said, Sarah started explaining to Victor about her parents and what she did as a child. Dor woke from whatever he was in, and got many questions from Sarah and Victor like, "Why am I here?" Dor had no answer but stated that they had not died. They are in a moment. This meant that the time has stopped because this was the point where there were no changes and they were in the same room at once. Dor then talks to Sarah and tells her that she shouldn't have tried to kill herself because she had more years to live. The section ends with Dor finally realizing that Sarah was starting to heal.
Quote: "You have not died, you are in the middle of a moment." ~This quote is being said by Dor and he is talking to Sarah and Victor. This quote means that they have reached the moment where everyone was in the same room. Dor states that time had stopped and this is the moment where the time would stop. What they have done to that point cannot be undone and whatever they do next is unwritten. This is an important quote that ties into the thing that the old man was saying about when time would stop. Dor: Dor is sitting on the skyscraper again, thinking about the people he followed and how their lives differ. He also thinks about how this world is so much different than his, all the technology and the way people treat each other. Dor was always watching the two people. He stood by Victor's dead body and watched Sarah's love life deepen. Not much is mentioned about Dor, mostly just that he has always been watching the two people ever since he got the assignment from the old man.
Victor: From studying, Victor knew how he was going to die and when. Every chapter is a step closer to him dying. He started getting numbness in his hands and feet,l his face turned a little gray, and there were various signs of renal failure. There could've been an alternate plan to him dying. They could freeze him before he dies. Victor gets even closer to dying, with his breathing accelerating. Grace keeps refusing to leave Victor as he wants her to go. Victor continues to lie to her about him not being here. He tells Roger to not do anything if he goes unconscious. Victor was barely alive, being brought to the cryonics facility to freeze. Sarah: Sarah still loves Ethan, but does he love her back as much? Ethan ignored her and didn't want to hang out with her anymore. Sarah grew more and more angry like a monster that couldn't be controlled. Sarah was drinking and couldn't control herself. She was dizzy and felt sick. She was all discombobulated in the morning and couldn't wake up. She refused to send a text to Ethan or do anything. Sarah was drinking again on New Year's Eve and was acting weird towards Lorraine, her mother. Sarah was suffering and Dor felt bad while watching her. She was helpless and chose wrong decisions. She now realized that she definitely suffered the consequences from doing those bad things. Quote: "It is never too late or too soon. It is when it is supposed to be." ~This quote is said by the old man talking to Dor. Dor is ashamed at himself for not helping Sarah and Victor at all and watching them suffer and die. This quote means that there is always a right time for things and you are never too late or too early to do something. It was Dor's destiny to help the two and affect their lives in a good way. Dor feels incompetent because he feels that he failed to do his job. He will have to figure out when the right moment will be. Dor: Dor had reached the city of his destiny and for the first time, asked, "What time is it?" Every evening, Dor would go to the top of the skyscrapers and sit on their ledges. Dor had no need for sleep or food, for he was "living in a different time grid altogether." His thoughts were usual, thinking of how much better it would be with Alli besides him. Dor finally reaches the two people he was supposed to find, but he is confused to why a man in a wheel chair and a lovestruck girl would be singled out from the masses. During Victor's procedure, he saw a shadow of Dor next to him. Dor was exploring the hospital and noticed how blood entered and exited the body. Dor then appears at the store that Alli went to for a message to Ethan. He assists her with the note.
Sarah: Through these chapters, it is still about Sarah's love life. Ethan was as attentive to Sarah as he was earlier. He was not so enthusiastic talking to her. Sarah was wondering why he wasn't happy and not saying his favorite word, "Lemon-ade." She decided to go on a train to NYC to get him a special watch. She then saw on the TV that the world is going to end next week and she thought of telling Ethan. Sarah went to the clock shop looking for the watch. Sarah couldn't explain the watch she was looking for and about 20 minutes had passed. She soon found it and was so happy. She got the $249 watch and said it was for her boyfriend, hesitantly. Now that she got the gift, she needed a place and time to give it to him. She then thought to write a message on the back of the watch. She went to the store and saw Dor there, who gave her the message. It was a meaningful one about time. Christmas....Christmas was when she was going to give the watch to Ethan. They would do it at Dunkin' Donuts. Victor: Victor is going to the store to buy a watch. This was Victor's last Christmas because he knew he was dying soon. The cryonics people would stop it once he was frozen so he could start the new world. In Chapter 43, Victor is buying his watch and wondering the history behind the name. He realized in the car that he never knew what the price of the watch was. Victor was in the hospital getting 2 shots when he saw Dor in the shadows. Along with Sarah, he saw Dor next to him. He blinked again and he was gone. Victor's father eventually died and it was very tragic. Everyone was sad and Victor thought that one day he would return, magically. Quote #1: "Sometimes, when you are not getting the love you want, giving makes you think you will." ~ This quote is referring to Sarah and Ethan. Ethan does not seem happy to Sarah and she tries to cheer him up but can't. She thinks that Ethan doesn't love her anymore. She decides to get him his favorite watch to cheer him up and make him love her again. This quote means that if you feel not loved, you tned to think that getting a gift for that person will make things better. This may not be the right way all the time. Quote #2: "Time flies with you." ~This is another quote referring to Sarah and Ethan. This is the message that Sarah decides to put on the back of Ethan's watch. This means that time goes really fast and suddenly you are saying good bye and its like no time passed at all. When Ethan reads this, he will want more time with Sarah. Dor: Dor starts off on Earth and in a small Spanish village. He is wondering what is going on in the world at the time. Dor used the hourglass to explore the world and the amazing features it has. He got modern clothes and trimmed hair which made him look more from the time he was there in at. Dor is traveling around the world, now, in France, Belgium, and Germany. He soon left Germany and reached Manhattan, swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. He then realized that there was no end to a man's ambition.
Sarah: Sarah meets up with Ethan and he brings a bottle of vodka. Sarah gets a little uncomfortable but accepts it. Ethan begins laying a kiss of Sarah, but she walks away. These couple of chapters don't really mention a lot about Sarah. Only that Lorraine knew that Sarah was doing something with a boy and she didn't know what she was doing. Victor: Victor is still with Jed and he explained his plan to Jed. Dialysis was the only that could keep Victor alive. He was trying to convince Jed to help him and he persuading him that his work will be known as successful. Victor is like Sarah and is not mentioned as much in chapters 33-40. Quote: "He wondered if there were no end to man's ambitions." ~This is another quote referring to Dor and this is mentioned at the end of the chapters. This means that there is no end to a man's life and personality. Dor is the man and there is no end to his life since he became immortal. Sarah: Sarah was calm and collective when she ran into Ethan after the incident. They talked and Sarah asked Ethan about that night and what he had to do. Lorraine was on to something and knew there was a boy involved with Sarah. She had to go to shelter on Saturday and woke up early getting dressed up as if she were going to a party. This is all that is said about Sarah and her conscience and what her thoughts were about this boy Ethan.
Victor: Victor starts off at a cryonics facility where they freeze bodies and meets a guy Jed. Victor continues to study his research and ignores all the pains he has and just studies. Victor never liked losing and by the results of his research, he is near defeat. Victor started to think of another life with Grace and the moments he lost with her. Victor remembered what Jed said about life and how to cure it. Victor had to be patient with his disease but he knew his time on Earth was up. Dor: Dor's story opens up with him in the cave and the clock ticking. Unlike any man before, Dor was able to exist without getting older. He wanted to hold on to the memories he had with his kids by carving shapes in the cave. He made a bunch of circles representing his children and a moon to remind him about Alli. It is now Dor's time to be free because Sarah is in her room, and Victor is in his study. It had been 6,000 years since the old man was in the cave and heaven met Earth. Dor rose in disbelief, since he was returning home. He was moving as if being pulled by strings. He was traveling and realized that after all these years, trying to escape, he could just fly away. When he awoke, he was on Earth. Quote: "The sand blew away. He felt himself hanging from something. He heard distant music and laughter. He was back on Earth." ~This quote is referring to Dor returning to Earth after the old man arrived at the cave when heaven met Earth. The first 3 sentences describe what the journey was like and how he got there. This ends Chapter 32 and the next chapter describes what Dor returns to. Sarah: We find out in chapter 18 that Sarah is really good at science. She would ace every biology exam there is but hate to look in the mirror. There is a description of Sarah stated, hazel eyes, too far apart, the dry, wavy hair, the gap between her teeth, the doughy flesh she had never really shed. She ate lunch by herself, walked home by herself, and spent most evenings in the house with her mother. She also ate dinner by herself with her computer. Her grades ranked third in her class, and she was waiting on an early admissions application to a nearby state university one that Lorraine could afford. We also find out that Sarah's boyfriend's name is Ethan. He then cancels their date because of something he has to do. She felt offended but then shook it off and was fine with it.
Victor: We find out about Victor that he was the 14th richest man in the world. He was an only child, born in France, who came to America and made it big, a true immigrant rags-to-riches story. When Victor was 9, his father was killed in a fight in a sea side tavern. A few days later, his mother jumped from a bridge. In less than a week, Victor was an orphan. He was put on a boat to join an uncle in America. He went to high school in Brooklyn. To make his money, he bought and sold many items which he invested in. He gave his first $100,000 to his uncle who raised him. He acquired car dealerships, real estate, and banks, one in Wisconsin. When he was 41, he met his wife Grace in an elevator. They did many things together like play tennis, visit museums and travel to many exotic places around the world. As we already know, Grace winds up dying and Victor is very sad. He continues looking for treatments but her time was up and eventually Victor was in for death himself. Dor: Dor wants time to stop so he could spend quality time with Alli watching the horizon on the hillside. Dor is constantly being told by his father that Nim is very strong and powerful. Dor and Alli had to find a place for their children with their parents. Nim is the reason why Dor and Alli are living in exile because how he bullied them. Dor later realized that Alli had a disease and he got really angry at himself for not realizing earlier. For had prayed heavily for her but it was too late, Alli was dead. This is why Dor wanted time to stop, so he could save Alli. Alli’s death sealed Dor’s fate of becoming Father Time.
Sarah: Sarah is convinced she is running out of time. She wants it to slow down. She still doesn’t get along with her mother and her mother still doesn’t know she is going on her date. Sarah is now anxious for her date and waits patiently for her clothes to dry. She is finally ready and now has to sprint to the convenience store, where she is meeting her date. Victor: At first, Victor is running out of time but then he wants time to go faster. He is running out of time because he is waiting for the research on his problem. He starts to get a little anxious just like Sarah waiting for the results to come back. He then wants time to go faster so he can get his results back faster. Dor: Dor is special at his age because he is the first to do something incredible. He is the first person on Earth to attempt counting and making numbers. Dor is a gentle, obedient child with a mind deeper than those around him. He is considered very unique to others because he can do things that others can't come close to doing. Throughout chapters 1-7, Dor progresses and is older now in his late 20's or 30's. He then is married to his childhood friend, Alli. From making inferences we learn that Dor is actually Father Time.
Victor: Victor is an old, wealthy man who starts out in the doctor's office. He is very close to dying. His concept of "losing time" is that he will not have that much time left before he dies. He is given a wheel chair that he doesn't want because he knows he will be helpless with it. Sarah: Sarah is a teenager who has a different sense of "running out of time" than everyone else. She thinks that being late for a date is "losing time." Ever since her parents got divorced, she has felt shut out and and her mother bosses her around. They say that it was all of her dad's fault. Quote: "And on this early page of man's story, one different child can change the world. Which is why God is watching him." This quote is referring to Dor and how intelligent and unique he is. He is capable of changing the world, bringing new ideas that can impact one's life. In this quote, it is stated that God is always watching that person. God doesn't want anything bad to happen to Dor because he knows what Dor is capable of. Once we realize that Dor is Father Time, we understand now why he was so smart and one of a kind. |
