Matt, Thomas, Branchie, and Kira go downstairs where Branchie and a toddler are and the the girl from the Fen and she sings a lot and she's really good, and her dad committed suicide. Talented orphans go to the Edifice. When Jamison came to visit Kira, she told him about how she heard growling on her way to the dyer and how Annabella told her that there are no beasts. Jamison was shocked that someone with so much knowledge would say that. After Jamison left, Kira felt the piece of cloth, but felt no comfort from it. It left her with a warning.

The morning after her conversation with Thomas, Kira wakes up, conscious that something—she’s not sure what—has changed. It’s raining that day. Lately, Jamison has been inspecting her work twice a day, and seems very pleased with it. Two days before, he visited her and pointed to the undecorated area, which Kira would begin decorating after the Gathering that autumn. Kira touched the area, as if trying to feel its magic, but couldn’t feel anything. Jamison assured Kira that the guardians would tell her what they want her to weave in the empty area of the robe. Kira said nothing, but thought that the guardians’ instruction won’t give the sense of magic she needs to weave.
A short time after the events of the previous chapter, Kira visits Annabella in her cottage. She goes there alone, a little frightened, since Matt has grown bored with their visits. When Annabella asks her why she’s frightened, Kira tells her that a wild beast chased her. Kira is surprised when Annabella laughs at this news—Annabella has always been kind to her. Annabella tells Kira that they’ll boil coneflowers today, and they get to work. As Kira and Annabella boil coneflowers, Kira tells Annabella again that she was frightened about wild beasts on her walk. Annabella again laughs, but this time tells Kira that there are no beasts. Kira is confused—while it’s true that there would be no beasts in the clearing where Annabella lives, since there are fires there, this doesn’t mean that there are no beasts in the forest. Kira thinks that Annabella sounds as childish as Matt. She tells Annabella that she heard growls, but Annabella insists that Kira heard a human pretending to be a beast. Later, when Kira is eating with Thomas, she asks him if he’s ever seen a beast. Thomas points out that the hunters bring beasts back from their hunts, but Kira replies that the only beasts they bring are hares, birds, or deer—nothing dangerous to humans. She tells Thomas that her father was supposedly taken by beasts. Thomas can’t think of anyone he knows who’s seen a beast. While he finds it hard to believe that beasts don’t exist, he suggests that he and Kira should believe Annabella, since her name has four syllables. Before they can discuss the matter any further, Thomas complains of a headache, since he’s been hard at work all day, and retires to his room. Kira’s day of walking outside has been exhausting, but satisfying, too; she thinks that Thomas should go outside more often.
In this chapter, Matt is trying to go to the hunt. While Kira is in Thomas's room she sees Matt joining the group of the hunt and then they go outside and stop him. He was starting to call himself Mattie. Kira and Thomas took him and Branch to take a bath and clean up. Matt tried to take Kira's pendant and said "Gimme" they found out that in the fen if you want something then you have to take it, and that's what he was trying to do. After Matt and Branch left he told his mates that he barely escaped and his mates were making fun of him that he was the only one clean out of the whole bunch.
Kira noticed that the robe only had a few blue spots faded almost too white. She began looking at the robe and where it needed to be repaired. Then Kira tried to memorize the plants in a rhythm to make them easier for her to remember. Thomas and Kira started to talk about how she wanted to go to where her old cott was and see if there were any plants she could use for colors. As Kira walked in the village towards her cott she noticed the tykes and chickens were running around on what Kira thought was wood pieces and jagged fragments of broken pots.. She saw that the plants were still there but the women were walking on them, but the plants were still good for the dying. She wanted to get away from her cott quickly so she wouldn't run into Vandara.
Just her luck, Vandara saw her and asked " liking your new life". Kira just kept walking and finally turned the corner to escape conversation with her. After that she went back and told Jamison that this needed a garden to grow the plants and she also needed a fire place and pots to dye the threads. Then she started on the robe. It took her a long time to do a little bit until it got darker so she stopped. Her hand hurt but she thought it was just because she just started. Kira went to Thomas`s room and they were looking out the window and all the men were getting ready for the hunting. When Kira saw a little boy grab a spear and ran through the crowd of men. She noticed that the boy was Matt. She turned to Thomas and said "Please Thomas, help me stop him." In the book Gathering Blue, Kira went to Annabella for help dying threads. Kira learned some of the colors for dying threads in chapter 8. When Kira is sent to Annabella`s, Matt and Branch follow her for her "protection." Annabella lives in the woods far away from everyone else. Kira starts learning names of the plants that she will be using for dying. Kira has to go to Annabella`s house every day to learn the names of the plants that she will be using for dying. Since Kira`s mom died Kira has been living in the Council of Edifice. She has to fix the singers robe, used for telling the past. Kira has to learn how to dye first.
In this chapter Kira meets Thomas. They have lunch together and Thomas tells her that his parents were killed in a lightning storm. Later that day she went to her room and Jamison was there. She was disappointed that none of the threads had been dyed. Kira confessed that her mother planned to teach her to dye but never started. Jamison sent her to Annabella to teach her to dye threads.
At the froth ring of the bell Kira goes back to the Council Edifice to find out where she is going to stay. They lead her down a corridor to her room. Unwilling to go into the room, Matt and Branch stayed in the hallway. Inside the room there was a bed, a closet, and a bathroom. The bed was made out of wood and was elevated off the ground with legs. The closet had several drawers with different sizes. One of the draws contained the singers robe all folded with its bright threaded colors. One of the smaller drawers had all the supplies she would need. In the bedroom there was a sink for washing all her needs. Also in the bathroom there was a tub. While she was staying in the room they where going to feed her. Matt was allowed to visit when ever he wanted to. She was also allowed to go and hang out with Thomas the carver boy.
During this chapter Kira meets Jamison as her Guardian and the trial ends. She finds out she gets to stay and Vandara is mad. Kira gets to live in the Council Edifice so Vandara gets her old cott to make as a pen for the tykes. Kira tells matt about the news and he goes and gets some stuff of Kira's from her cott that he had saved. Kira's job was to repair, restore, and complete the Singers Robe. While Kira is waiting for the bells she walks to the weaving shed and finds out that one lady broke her arm and her place is open if she wanted it but Kira said no. Then Kira went to her cott and got a few supplies and met Matt at the steps before the bells rang.
In Chapter 4, we meet Kira's defender, Jamison who recites everything Vandara claims about Kira. We also find out that Jamison knew Kira's father and watched him be taken away by the beasts. Despite her twisted leg, Kira contributes by weaving and picking up and cleaning up scraps, which is greatly appreciated by everyone. Kira's skill to thread has grown over many years and has taken her mother's work to a new level, by adding color to cloth. During the trial, it is stated that Vandara's accusation was false and not true about Kira and the trial was dismissed. Kira walks outside the Council Edifice, noting even as the trial is happening that life goes on for everyone else: babies cry, tykes fight, etc.
